Where Vanderpol Cycles, Eindhoven - internship
Year 2024
My part Time study, fixture design, shop-floor trials
Result 96 s to 68 s per unit, adopted on the line
I was given a station that everyone agreed was slow and nobody had measured. So I measured it - 140 cycles across three operators and two shifts, on paper, standing there.
Most of the time was not assembly, it was the operator finding and orienting the shell. I designed a fixture that presents it in one position and holds it while both bearings go in, then had it made in the company's own workshop so the cost stayed small.
Cycle time went from 96 to 68 seconds, and the two operators who tried it kept it. That last part matters more than the number.
