This one was not for a mark. A friend needed to tow 90 kg of market stall across Eindhoven twice a week and the bought hitch had already cracked once.
I made a hitch that pivots in two axes and bolts to the rear axle, from 4 mm steel I could cut and weld myself. Then, because it carries a load on public roads, I put it in a bench frame with a load cell and pulled on it.
It held 2.4 kN with no visible yield, which is roughly two and a half times the worst case I could talk myself into. It has done eighteen months of Saturdays since.
